Overview
Components are essential elements utilized in the production of a product. The supply chain relies on a series of interconnected components that serve as inputs and outputs to one another, ultimately resulting in the creation of the final product. The process commences with the most upstream component, where component details, supplier information, input component suppliers, and manufacturing processes are recorded.
Initially, the component will have default components and default supplier mix along with default process technologies that was added in the LCA Data management tool. You can later update these components once the supply chain is attached to a product.
In a supply chain, every component will have 4 sections which includes:
- The component details: It includes component name code, material composition, key differentiators and input component weights.
- Supplier summary: The facilities who produce the output
- Input supplier summary: the suppliers from whom the input is acquired and the component-to-component transportation
- Manufacturing process: The actual process technology that runs inside a facility along with the foreground and background flow parameters.
Component details
Component details include the component's material composition, specification, input components, type, name, and code. Initially when a component is created from a template chain, it has the Default processes, values and Global supplier mix attached to it.
The component will have the below parameters based on component template it was created from:
- Component type
- Name as Component template name
- Default raw material (Material composition)
- Input component that is connected in the template chain
- Global supplier mix (For both input and output suppliers)
- Default process stages & process technologies selected along with default parameters.
Note: You can navigate to product, manufacturing, supply chain, process chain and footprint using the hot buttons found on the left panel of the screen.
Material composition
The component's material composition is determined by selecting the raw materials used and assigning a percentage to each of them. This composition is then saved in the material library, which serves as a repository for maintaining such information. If the material composition has more than one raw material, then each raw material takes up equal distribution of material composition (e.g., bamboo 50% and cotton 50%). You cannot remove a material composition, but can update the material composition with the ones from their material library.
Input component
Input components refer to the components that serve as inputs to the main component. When adding an input component, you can specify component relationship or supplier relationship that exist between similar types of components.
Add an input component
To add an input component, you can either add a component which has a relationship with an existing component or add it individually.
When adding component relationship, define the percentage of share between the components
You can also add supplier relationship between two components in case the same component is supplied by two suppliers. Define the percentage of share between the suppliers
Add component
To ensure all suppliers and processes are identified, you have the option to add components to your product. These components can be searched from either the Green Story library or your existing library.
Click on "add component" in the component section
Select a component from either Green Story library or your existing library
You can also view the upstream components attached to the components
Other actions:
- Edit component: Clicking on edit component will allow you to edit the details
- Delete: Clicking on delete will remove the component and its upstream chain
- Replace a component: You can replace a component by selecting an existing component, the input component along with its upstream component is updated with the selected one.
Supplier summary
This section contains the summary of all the suppliers and associated suppliers producing the component. One component can have one output supplier only, but there can be multiple facilities that produce the component. This is divided into two sections.
Component’s supplier summary
At the template level, a global supplier mix will be assigned to the component. You cannot edit global supplier mix supplier information, however you can replace the supplier mix with an actual supplier. In order to do so you would need to update the input component suppliers of its immediate downstream process.
Once the actual supplier is identified, supplier-related information along with its facilities will be listed on the screen.
Component's internal supplier summary
Whenever a component is produced, one of the intermediate processes might be carried out by an external supplier. These suppliers are not exactly sub-contractors as the brand is in direct association with the secondary supplier but not the supplier. So, they are added separately as secondary suppliers.
To identify the internal supplier, link a supplier from your existing list of suppliers.
Link a supplier
1. To link a supplier click on the "link supplier" button.
2. You can search for suppliers by supplier details or supplier location
Search for supplier by their details
Search for the supplier you are looking for. If the supplier already exists in the database, you will see it display in the dropdown. If the supplier doesn't exist, you may need to "add the supplier" first.
Once the supplier is found and selected, the system will display all the facilities associated with that particular supplier.
Choose at least one facility of the supplier where the component is being made.
Search for suppliers by their location
When the detail of the actual supplier is not known you can identify the country or region of the supplier.
- Select the country or region (State/Province) from the drop down
- Assign a production share
Note: If you choose this option you will not be able to customize the process to add primary process data as ther eis no data from the supplier. Additionally, all footprint calculation will be based on this region or country for all processes related to this component.
Other actions:
- Replace supplier: You can replace a supplier by following the same steps under link a supplier
- Manage facilities: Clicking on manage facilities opens the list of facilities of that supplier. If the facility is being used in a process and is removed from the list then the process should be associated to default facility.
Input supplier summary
Overview
Summary of all the suppliers from whom the input component is acquired. This also includes the transportation mode they use to send the component. This is divided into two sections:
1. Input component supplier summary:
The input components you identified in the component details screen gets listed in the section here along with their production share percentage, supplier and their location
You can edit the information by either replacing the supplier, changing the production share or managing the facility.
If you are adding a new supplier and do not know the exact details, you can also add the country or region of the supplier.
2. Component to component transportation:
- When there are multiple input components linked to the output component, for each input component there will be a tab. The tab header should show the input component’s name and code. Within the tab we will show the transportation details of that input component.
When an input component is produced, it will be transported to the output component supplier for further processes. To do so, Identify the pick up location which sends the products to the drop location and identify the transportation used.
At the template level, a Global supplier mix will be assigned to the transportation. You cannot edit the percentage distribution under the global supplier mix. However, you can replace the supplier mix with an actual location/supplier.
The drop location will be the location of the supplier producing the component.
Update the percentage of products received by the drop location
Identify the facility sending the product to the drop location for each input component
Identify the mode of transportation used to send the product.
Other actions: Replace supplier, Change production share and manage facilities

Manufacturing process
As per the component data identified in previous sections, default processes get linked to the component. Initially in the manufacturing process there are 5 tabs: Manufacturing, Emission & waste, Practice, Shipping and Documentation.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing has two sections: A left fixed column that displays aggregate or breakdown process stages and then a right section that displays its process technology / stages that is attached. You can further customize the process technologies by updating its parameters.
Choose the process you want to customize, and click on "manage primary data". This will allow you to customize the parameters, emission waste, practices and documents for the process at a facility level.
- Parameters
Parameters include details around input, additional inputs, output and waste.- Under input, you will find all the input components that were added in component details screen. You can edit only the loss percentage, but not the weight.
- Under additional inputs, you will find different background and foreground flow. You can update the value of the background flow. The background flow must lie between the threshold values. You can add different providers of the particular flow and its percentage.
- Output contains the output component and its value.
- Waste contains details around the waste management methods carried out by the supplier.
- Emission and waste
- Documents
